The basket, … Read more A traditional polychrome Chinese three-tiered covered black and red wedding basket with gold embellishments and a brass handle. The basket, which has a woven bottom, is made of hand-woven and split bamboo and willow fibers in two layers to provide strength and rigidity. The outer layer is woven in a traditional geometric designs. 

Wedding rituals have a long history in ancient China—the most significant custom being the presentation of gifts. This basket opens to reveal three compartments of stacked trays. The gifts carried in those trays represented the couple’s engagement, the groom’s promise to the bride’s family and the acceptance of the bride and groom into each other’s family.
