In 1971, Hopfer created the Mah Jong lounge sofa, Roche Bobois’s most recognized and iconic design. The freedom of form and function that this fully modular low seating system allows broke the design mold and encouraged an entirely new way of organizing living spaces. A system of cushions that champion complete freedom of form and function. Avant-garde at the time of its creation, it is an iconic piece today. Upholstered in fabrics designed by Kenzo Takada, Missoni, and Jean-Paul Gaultier, the Mah Jong has long set the standard for creative modularity. From three simple elements, stacked or juxtaposed, the Mah Jong allows for infinite compositions, ranging from simple to highly complex: armchair, sofa, lounge chair, bed, or living space. It accommodates all positions and uses, reflecting the enthusiasm and vitality of the era from which it originates. Mah Jong cushions are entirely handmade, sewn in Italy in a dedicated workshop using the same processes and techniques as the Haute Couture fashion industry. Each component is dressed in exclusive fabrics and hand-stitched in the style of a luxury mattress.

The Mah Jong remains a symbol of complete creative freedom. This 13-piece unit comprises stackable floor cushions and backs (one adjustable), as well as five throw pillows, all covered in a selection of stylish fabrics by Missoni, the definition of Italian fashion at its most elegant and exuberant.
