He began studying painting and sculpture at the Berlin Art Academy in 1961. Since 1970, Kriester has worked primarily as a sculptor. He held his first major exhibition that same year. A large portion of his work at that time dealt with abstracted heads, primarily formed by spikes and nails, which he also referred to as steles or head signs. from 1982 onward, Kriester lived and worked in Albenga, a town in Liguria, alternating with Berlin. For the sculptures he created there, he used porous, dull white to slightly pinkish limestone that had grown on site. A sculpture made from this material, "Large White Head Sign" (1984–87), is on display in the Chancellery in Berlin. The artist adhered to the existing form of the stone block and only worked on its surface. See less
