Empoli is a town in Tuscany with a long glassmaking tradition that originally grew out of producing large wine containers and the region’s famous green wine flasks (often seen with straw wrapping). By the mid-1800s, Empoli became increasingly important for glass production, and the area’s factories expanded beyond utilitarian bottles into broader household and decorative glass.

In the 1960s and 1970s, glassworks in and around Empoli produced a wide range of brightly colored and textured decorative bottles and decanters, many made in molds with bold geometric, hobnail, grape, or optic patterns. These pieces were widely exported and sold as affordable, fashionable décor and barware, sometimes paired with matching tumblers like this set. Collectors later popularized the nickname “genie bottles” for the tall decanter shapes with elongated stoppers.

It’s also worth noting that “Empoli” is a region attribution, not a single brand. Multiple factories operated in the area, and many pieces were originally sold with paper/foil labels or simple base markings rather than etched signatures, so sets are often described as “Empoli-style”.
