Foundation: Wool pile on cotton foundation
Colors: Rich brick-red field, deep navy blue medallion, ivory, sky blue, soft green, and camel accents
This handsome antique Persian Serapi/Heriz rug displays the bold geometric artistry that has made Heriz carpets among the most sought-after village rugs in the world. The rug features a powerful navy-blue stepped medallion floating on a vibrant brick-red field, surrounded by angular vines, stylized palmettes, rosettes, and tribal floral motifs characteristic of the finest Heriz weavings.
The spacious drawing and strong architectural composition are hallmarks of classic Serapi design. Particularly attractive are the soft sky-blue highlights and light green corner spandrels that create a beautiful contrast against the saturated red ground. The border is equally impressive, displaying traditional geometric motifs and stylized floral elements rendered in harmonious vegetable-dyed colors.
Woven from high-quality mountain wool, the rug possesses the durable handle and crisp drawing for which antique Heriz rugs are renowned. The colors have mellowed beautifully with age while retaining remarkable vibrancy and visual impact.
Why It Is Special
This rug combines many of the qualities collectors seek in antique Heriz and Serapi rugs: bold tribal geometry, excellent color contrast, spacious drawing, and strong decorative presence. The classic navy medallion against the glowing red field creates a timeless design that works equally well in traditional and contemporary interiors.
Its balanced proportions, pleasing color palette, and authentic village character make it an excellent example of Northwest Persian weaving from the late 19th to early 20th century.
A particularly decorative and collectible antique Persian Heriz/Serapi rug with excellent visual appeal, strong geometric drawing, and the rich colors that have made these rugs enduring favorites among collectors and interior designers.
