This captivating informal abstract modernist oil painting of a snowy landscape entitled "Brook in Winter" is signed by master level German artist Walter Wohlschlegel (1907-1999) and dated 1965.
Created on hardboard, Wohlschlegel employs a Fauvist style, showcasing striking contrasts and an intriguing play of colors. Notably, the delicate lavender washes over the gray sky and snow, while a bold deep blue stream flows into the grooves of the open snow on the surface.
The artwork is encased in a mid-century "distressed" white oak frame featuring a gold inner accent. While there are some minor scrapes on the wood frame's surface, the painting itself remains in excellent condition, showing no signs of chips, cracks, or crazing.
About the Artist:
Wohlschlegel's artistic journey extended from the 1930s to the late 1990s, briefly interrupted by his service as a soldier in Greece during World War II. Upon his return, he made his home in Freiburg, a city in southwestern Germany near the French border.
This particular painting, "Brook in Winter", was created, signed, and dated in 1965. It marks a pivotal shift in Wohlschlegel's work as he began to evolve during the late 1960s and 1970s, ultimately incorporating influences from both Pop Art and Color Field painting.
