Gabbeh rugs are made from hand-spun wool dyed with vegetable pigments, and the patterns are created by knots tied on a rectangular warp. The surface of the rug is usually divided into simple geometric patterns of different colours. The word Gabbeh means rough, natural, unprocessed. Compared to other Persian rugs, Gabbeh is thicker. The fact that Iranian manufacturers were among the few to retain the traditional technique of dyeing with natural pigments made these rugs very popular in the Western world, especially in the second half of the twentieth century. This example is dyed a red that gradually changes to different shades to form irregular stripes. The rug is in excellent condition. See less
