Item description:
Large glazed and vitrified ceramic centerpiece, entirely hand-modeled and perforated, embellished around the belly with a decoration of flowers and leaves in the classic Viennese Secession style, in shades of white, yellow, red, and orange on a beautiful speckled green background. The vase has also been finished with metallic lustres, particularly visible on the inside of the object, which make it particularly shiny. The centerpiece is a good size, considering that it has a diameter of 23 centimeters. Marked under the base with the "Wiener Keramik" mark, in the shape of a flower vase with the letters "G" and "K" on the sides and numbered with a catalog number. Produced after 1919, as illustrated in detail in the photos immediately below this description. The authorship of this vase can be attributed to Michael Powolny, one of the greatest representatives of the Viennese Secession, who founded Wiener Keramik in 1906, which was then absorbed by Moser and Hoffmann's Wiener Werksatte in 1907, with whom Powolny continued to collaborate for many years.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
The ceramics created by Michael Powolny and his workshop are among those that have received the highest prices and results in Europe. In fact, our internet research shows that the four highest auction results achieved by this artist in the "ceramics" category range from €34,000 to €45,000, plus auction fees of 25-30%, while in the "sculpture" category, the four highest auction results range from €30,000 to €50,000. We also note that even small vases and sculptures are auctioned for a minimum of €1,000-1,500 up to €3,000-5,000. Then, of course, the demand for his ceramics on various online art and antiques sales platforms is even higher.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Michael Powolny (1871-1954) was one of the most important artists of the Viennese Secession of 1900. In 1906, he founded his own factory, Wiener Keramik, which in 1907 became part of Josef Hoffmann and Kolomon Moser's Wiener Werkstatte, with whom Michael Powolny collaborated for many years. We are talking about giants of the European ceramics scene and of European design as a whole in the first 50 years of the 1900s. In the last photos, we have included the various marks used by the manufacturer, including ours.
