Karl Lagerfeld is the celebrated designer for the House of Chanel in Paris, and Anna Piaggi, a former fashion editor for Italia Vogue has frequently been described as Europe's Diana Vreeland.
Lagerfeld's Sketchbook is a personal illustrative tribute to Anna Piaggi. A brilliant fashion editor, an arbiter of taste and design, and one of the most original personalities of the modern fashion world, she has developed a unique mode of dressing. Drawing on the past as well as the present, she consistently invents her own costumes: possibly a cloak from the 1920's by Poiret combined with a warrior's tunic from Benin, or a French pharmacist's overall worn as a party dress. The result is always utterly original, often intensely dramatic, and occasionally flamboyantly theatrical.
These never-before-published watercolors and pen-and-ink sketches, with their uncanny depiction of detail and their ability to convey the effect of an entire outfit, give clues to Lagerfeld's own designing methods and provide an endlessly fascinating diary of dress. Made over a period of 12 years, they reveal Lagerfeld's extraordinary skills as a draftsman.
