Bronze with black patina signed by the sculptor Victor Rousseau (1865 – 1954). Of Belgian origin, he cut stones from a very young age and then participated in the construction of the colossal courthouse in Brussels. Through his various travels, Victor Rousseau was inspired by art nouveau in France and the Renaissance style in Italy.
This sculpture represents a man tenderly holding a child in his arms and feeding the child. He holds a spoon high and a bowl. He wears a hat, period clothing and clogs. Sitting on a rock, he is accompanied by a faithful dog by his side. The work exudes a warm and intimate atmosphere, capturing a moment of tenderness, emblematic of the beginnings of life.
The artist's signature is present on the terrace. The sculpture rests on an elegant morello cherry marble base. This bronze is notable for its delicate details – from the expressions of the faces to the textures of the clothing – which testify to the remarkable know-how of this artist nicknamed “the sculptor of souls”.
