Wow - has this artist’s story captured my heart! Lawrence A Jones was from my hometown of Lynchburg, VA. After being discovered by a famous poet, Jones was encouraged to go to art school in Chicago. His work eventually morphed into lovely depictions of African American daily life, so I believe this is one of his early works. The woman I purchased it from bought it at a 2012 estate sale and documented everything on a green note, which I am leaving stuck to the back for the buyer. This is such a lovely piece of history, and it’s painted on board. Jones also has works in The Met, and now you can have one of his artworks for your wall.
Here is what the web has to say about Lawrence A Jones:
Lawrence Jones was a painter and printmaker whose work is relatively unknown. He moved to Chicago from the Lynchburg, VA area with money raised by his town, to study at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1932. He was awarded a full scholarship, worked in the Federal Art Project and later was included in the prestigious Tanner Art Galleries' Exhibition of the Art of the American Negro (1851-1940) in the summer of 1940. Jones went on to teach art at Dillard University in New Orleans, and won a Rosenwald Scholarship to study in Mexico, where he worked at the Taller Gráfica Popular. He had a long teaching career, working at Fort Valley State College in Georgia, and became head of the art department at Jackson State Teachers College. His prints are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the St. Louis Art Museum.
