Afanasij Ivanovich Scheloumoff (1892–1983) was a Russian-born painter renowned for his vivid depictions of battle scenes, Cossack life, and dynamic equestrian subjects. Born in Kamieniec Podolski (now Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine), he pursued art studies at the Odessa Art School and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg under the tutelage of battle painter N.S. Samokish. His education was interrupted by World War I, during which he served in the 1st Volunteer Corps under General Anton Kutepov.
Following the Russian Revolution, Scheloumoff fled Russia, first to Turkey and then to Yugoslavia. In 1930, he participated in the Great Exhibition of Russian Art in Belgrade. After World War II, he settled in Starnberg, near Munich, Germany, where he continued his artistic career. His works were exhibited in cities such as Munich, Stuttgart, and Caracas, and are held in museums across Serbia, the United States, and Germany.
Scheloumoff’s paintings are characterized by their dynamic compositions and often feature scenes of Cossack riders, fox hunts, and troikas pursued by wolves.
Throughout his career, Scheloumoff was known by several name variants, including Athanasei Iwanowitsch Scheloumoff, Afanasy Sheloumoff, and Athanas Ivanovich Scheloumoff. See less
