Marthe Orant is a French painter born in Poissy in Seine-et-Oise on June 3, 1874 and died on August 27, 1957 at Sainte-Anne hospital in Paris. It was at the convent, during her childhood, that she learned about drawing and then perfected her artistic education with artists such as Marcel Baschet, Maurice Bompard and Henri Royer.
She subsequently became closer to the Nabis and in particular to Edouard Vuillard, whose mistress she was, but also to Pierre Bonnard. This proximity to the Nabis masters is particularly distinguished in his painting, including our landscape of Brittany, a region marked by Nabi art very present at the museum in Pont-Aven. We notice in some of her works that she will follow the precepts of Édouard Vuillard whose painting is described as follows: a refusal of all modeling, the collage of colors, a Japanese imprint, a certain strangeness. These terms can be applied to the work of Marthe Orant.
Often placed in the line of post-impressionism, Marthe Orant settled on rue de Vaugirard in Paris at the end of the 19th century, where many artists lived at the same time. It was only from 1923 that Marthe Orant began to exhibit at the Salon National. She did not become a partner until 1933. She has been a member of the Salon des Artistes Français since 1925 and the following year, she became a member of the Salon des Indépendants. She is also a member of the Salon d’Automne. from 1928 to 1940, she exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries and received a medal for her painting at the 1937 Universal Exhibition.
