Jean Roulland is one of the main protagonists of the Roubaix Group alongside Arthur Van Hecke, Eugène Dodeigne and Eugène Leroy.
He took classes at the Roubaix School of Fine Arts. After working in a ceramics factory, he devoted himself full-time to sculpture from 1960 and moved to Ardèche for a few years between 1963 and 1967, before returning to settle permanently in French Flanders. Influenced in his youth by the work of Brancusi, he created a few sculptures in wood, ceramic or stone before developing his much more expressionist personal style from 1961. Fascinated by bronze, he learned the lost wax technique on his own, and himself cast the first copy of most of his bronzes in his workshop. At the same time he developed a painted work (a few canvases, but mainly pastels), as well as engravings.
Jean Roulland received the Rodin and Lenchener prizes in 1972 in Paris and, in 1981, the Special Prize, 1st Kotaro Takamura Grand Prize, Hakone (Japan). In 1991, a major retrospective of his sculpted work 1961-1991 was dedicated to him at the Hospice Comtesse de Lille. Jean Roulland receives the Maria Pilar de la Béraudière Sculpture Prize awarded by the Academy of Fine Arts on November 17, 2010, awarded in memory of Paul-Louis Weiller, who distinguishes all of his work.
His works are present in numerous private and public collections as well as in several French and foreign museums.
