(image) The checkerboard is one of the emblematic motifs of modern art. It can be included in the grid motif, which encompasses and structures it. Malevich pioneered the pictorial structure of the grid with his Expo 0.10 in St. Petersburg in 1915. Mondrian also used the grid, even in his Fauvist-inspired period, to delineate his landscapes. In our work, Sonia Delaunay follows this concept of the grid, a device structuring the checkerboard motif as a scheme for organizing space. She interprets it as a diagonal line of force, organizing both the dynamic movement of the composition and, through a play of chromatic contrasts, its depth. Several planes appear in the construction of the composition: the first presented by the checkerboard, the one composed of triangles and then the one composed of semicircles.
