Watercolor on paper, “Village” French School, 19th century. XX – France
This magnificent watercolor presents a beautiful and serene landscape animated by the presence of man and his buildings. Through a sober and contained color palette that oscillates between white, yellow and grayish tones, it transmits an atmosphere of calm that calls for silence. The warmth of the yellowish tones of the landscape and the way the light falls on it transports us to a summer sunset. The brushstrokes are loose, thick and fast, opening the possibility that it was made outdoors, just as the artists of the Barbizon school and the impressionists did with their interest in the capture of lighting effects at a certain time of day.
The watercolor is framed in a beautiful golden frame animated by vegetal and floral motifs. This frame was made by the framing house Le Cottage, whose workshop was located in Bordeaux. Along with the production of frames for paintings, lithographs and engravings, they also dedicated themselves to restoration and the application of gold leaf. The decoration of this frame begins with the preparation of the wood by sanding it, so that the pigment and materials adhere well to the support. Subsequently, a layer of varnish is applied, and while it is sticky, the sheets of gold leaf are applied. Gold leaf, due to its delicacy, must be applied carefully with the help of a pelonesa, a type of flat brush, without a handle, usually made of horse or ox hair. Once the sheets have been glued to the surface, a brush is used to remove the excess parts, uniform the surface and eliminate all types of imperfections. Finally, a layer of shellac is applied, a product that prevents the gold leaf from peeling off and allows you to paint over it, in this case the vegetal and floral details.
