A late 19th century Cloudband Kazak from the village of Chondzoresk in the Karabagh region of the Caucasus Mountains — one of the most celebrated and sought-after sub-types in the entire Kazak weaving tradition. This rare piece displays the celebrated cloudband medallion motif — undulating diamond forms that symbolize harmony and movement — set against a glowing maroon field of extraordinary color depth. The composition is framed by an abrash blue main border, its tonal variation a testament to the hand-dyeing tradition of the mountain village weavers.
Cloudband Kazaks are prized above all other Kazak types for the rarity and visual power of their medallion format — the cloud-like forms, derived from Chinese artistic motifs that entered the Caucasian design vocabulary via the Silk Road, give these pieces a dynamic, almost three-dimensional quality that sets them apart from all other Caucasian designs. This example in excellent condition is a collector's piece of the highest order. Kazak rugs, woven by village artisans in the mountainous region of the South Caucasus — encompassing present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia — are among the most boldly designed and vibrantly colored tribal rugs in the world. Their large-format geometric medallions, brilliant vegetable-dyed palette, and the thick, lustrous pile made from high-altitude mountain wool have made them enduringly sought after by collectors and interior designers who prize authenticity, energy, and the beauty of genuine handcraft.
