A rare vintage Persian ivory Sarouk rug from the second quarter of the 20th century — and the ivory ground is indeed the exceptional feature here. Where the vast majority of Sarouk rugs are woven on deep red or navy fields, this piece presents its allover floral pattern on a luminous ivory canvas that gives the composition a freshness, openness, and visual warmth entirely distinct from its more common counterparts.
The vibrant floral motifs in yellow, blue, red, pink, and green stand out against the ivory field with a clarity and brightness that red-field Sarouks cannot achieve — each flower a small jewel of color against the pale ground. Hand-knotted with the meticulous craftsmanship for which Sarouk weavers are celebrated, this is a genuinely rare and desirable piece. The Sarouk rug tradition, originating in the village of Sarouk near Arak in Western Persia, represents one of the most celebrated and widely collected categories of 20th century Persian carpet. Sarouk rugs are distinguished by their lush, heavy wool pile, their allover floral bouquet designs, and a richness of color — particularly the deep, saturated reds and navy blues — that has made them among the most recognizable and sought-after Persian rugs in the American and European collector markets since the early 20th century.
