Offered is a circa. mid 1970s, early 1980s carved wood chess set made in Poland, consisting of a two-toned, lacquered Hornbeam wood game board on the surface of a hinged folding wood box that includes the 32 intricately carved playing pieces made of tinted, etched and lacquered wood game pieces that have chiseled motifs. The folding chess board has compartments for piece storage.
There is no maker's mark or label, however, wood artisans in Poland proliferated during the mid 20th Century making wood marquetry wares for Eastern-bloc, as well as European tourism and export.
The King pieces are 3.25” inches tall, Queen 2.25”, Bishop 2.25”, Knight 2.125”, Rook 1.875” and pawns are 3 3/8”.
The board / box measures approximately 17” x 17” x 1.125” open, and 17" x 8.625" x 2" when closed.

The folding box has its original hardware that open and close with ease. The game board has evident signs of wear (see photos), some scuffs, and scratches, however, there are no chips or cracks. The interior of the box has red felt-lined place-holders for the game pieces. Any imperfections in craftsmanship are innate, and any wear is commensurate with age and past usage. less
