the starting point for this project was a very specific production process: cast iron. It is one of the oldest methods of working ferrous metals. The production process has an almost archaic physicality and materiality. Iron foundries are part of heavy industry.
although cast iron is mainly used for decorative purposes, such as in victorian garden furniture, it is a material with two distinctive characteristics: it is heavy and sturdy. Cast iron performs well under compression, which is why it is used as a structural material in bridge construction and, on a scale closer to that of furniture, as a base for heavy machinery.
it is precisely this use of cast iron that inspired brut, a collection of tables and benches. The design recalls the industrial use of cast iron and applies the grammar of this material to the realm of contemporary furniture: a solid and uncompromising material. The name brut means raw and untreated, but at the same time it also brings to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine. It is therefore a name that expresses refinement and sophistication, which are also characteristics of our project.
the name evokes something raw, unfinished. A massive piece of heavy, inflexible iron. However, brut also brings to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine, which speaks to us of refinement and elegance, qualities that are also intrinsic to our project.
the brut collection consists of a large rectangular table, a height-adjustable trestle table, two round tables, a bistro table, and two types of benches.
