Georg Macco studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy between 1880 and 1887 under Eugen Gustav Dücker and Johann Peter Theodor Janssen and produced drawings for Die Gartenlaube and coat of arms designs for the works of his brother Hermann Friedrich Macco. He then moved to Munich to study and undertook numerous trips from there, which provided him with inspiration and motifs for his works of art. This resulted in series of paintings from the Alpine highlands, Norway, Spitsbergen, and Italy. Although it was still rare at that time to deal with Oriental motifs, Macco's numerous works, which were created during his travels to Athens, Constantinople, Baalbek, Jerusalem, Cairo, and Mecca, soon became some of his most sought-after art objects.


Several of Georg Macco's works are on display at the Düsseldorf Art Museum, the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen, the Rudolfinum in Prague, and, since 1888, the Alpine Museum in Munich. This piece has an attribution mark,
