About the Artist
Fedor Encke (1851–1926) occupies an important place among Germany's leading academic portrait painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Berlin, he received his early artistic training under the distinguished painter Karl Gussow before continuing his studies in Rome and Paris, where he absorbed the traditions of the European Old Masters and developed the refined realism that became the hallmark of his work.

A member of one of Prussia's notable artistic families, Encke was the younger brother of sculptor Erdmann Encke and the grandson of Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau, whose close association with King Frederick William II of Prussia placed the family within the cultural circles of the royal court.

By the 1880s, Encke had established himself as a portrait painter of international reputation, maintaining a Berlin studio while traveling extensively between Germany, Paris, and New York. His distinguished clientele included leading financiers, industrialists, politicians, and public figures, among them President Theodore Roosevelt.
