Patina-finished bronze sculpture, better known as "The Antwerp Dockworker," signed by Constantin Meunier
Constantin Meunier (1831–1905) was a Belgian artist renowned for his works depicting the working class.
A student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels starting in 1848, he exhibited at the Brussels Salon as early as 1851.
He devoted himself to depicting the working class, both in his paintings and sculptures: Meunier became one of the masters of a realistic and social art form that approached naturalism. He helped give a face to the working class and contributed to depicting the new realities brought about by industrial growth.
He expressed this through his dark and dramatic paintings, and then—beginning in the mid-1880s—through his angular bronze sculptures.
His works can be seen in various museums in Belgium, or at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris
