A very attractive antique oil on canvas landscape painting by the French Post Impressionist artist Max Bouvet (1854-1942), the painting circa 1890.
The painting depicts a pastoral scene of a quintessentially French haystack of conical form with a pointed top, the vibrant yellow of the hay is set against the calm blue Summer sky to the background. To the right of the painting is a windbreak of trees (most likely Poplar trees), to the foreground the shadow of the haystack can be seen & the field is painted in the impasto technique with hues of brown & green, the painting is dedicated and signed lower right " A Mon Ami Maurice Montégut" and signed "Max Bouvet".
Maurice Montégut (1855-1911), was a celebrated French novelist & poet born in Paris, he was a prolific author of novels, short stories and poetry, he lived in Montmarte and was friendly with many of the famous French Impressionists and Post Impressionist artists.
The painting typifies the early Post-Impressionist style with the use of vibrant colors and thickly applied paint to provide texture & depth, this painting is housed in the original Art Nouveau style carved & gilded frame. Condition of the painting and frame are excellent this very attractive painting is ready to hang on your wall.
Bouvet was an artist born in 1854, in the Southwest of France in the coastal city of La Rochelle. Bouvet was viewed as one of the early French Post-Impressionists and painted seascapes and panoramic landscapes in the Breton & Vendée regions. He was heavily influenced by the Impressionists and one can see the obvious influence of Claude Monet's work in this painting, Monet had completed a number of such paintings of haystacks. Bouvet was also an accomplished operatic baritone singer.
The painting at sight without the frame is 24.5" x 16"
