The design was realised by Théophile Steinlen, the Swiss-born French artist and printmaker known for his striking illustrations and political activism. Steinlen’s work, including his famous "Chat Noir" posters, became emblematic of the Belle Époque era and Montmartre’s thriving artistic scene.
Le Chat Noir, meaning "The Black Cat" in French, was one of the most iconic entertainment venues of the 19th century. Founded by Rodolphe Salis on November 18, 1881, at 84 Boulevard de Rochechouart, it became the first modern cabaret, offering guests the unique experience of sitting at tables with alcoholic drinks while enjoying a variety of performances.
