Bay Colony Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this wonderful early 20th century antique Roycroft hand hammered copper ashtray or catchall. The Roycroft community was founded by Elbert Hubbard in East Aurora, New York. It was initially a small, independent guild of artisans working in the Arts and Crafts style, inspired by the ideals of William Morris and the British Arts and Crafts movement. Hubbard aimed to create a community where fine craftsmanship and artistic integrity were the highest priorities, in contrast to the mass production and poor craftsmanship that he saw as dominant in industrial America.
The Roycroft community grew rapidly, attracting talented artists and craftsmen, including metalworkers, woodworkers, bookbinders, leatherworkers, and printers. One of the most iconic products of the Roycroft shops is their hand-hammered copperware. Roycroft's copper artisans would meticulously hammer and shape copper into functional and decorative items like vases, bowls, candlesticks, trays, lamps etc. This ashtray or catchall has a 4 1/2” diameter and is approximately 1/2” tall. The catchall has an attractive hand hammered surface with a reticulated design around the perimeter and bears the Roycroft maker’s mark on the underside.
