Made with hand-knotted wool and originating from Persia circa 1900-1910, this 10x13 antique Doroksh rug features a minimalist teal-blue field with a central diamond medallion surrounded by multiple ornate geometric borders in coral-red and camel tones
On the Design:
This antique Dorokhsh rug exemplifies the sophisticated design approach characteristic of 19th century Northeast Persian weaving traditions—--a rarity to find an all over Persian rug of such versatile size, scale, and love in its every inch. The design features a bold central field in teal-blue that creates dramatic visual contrast with the elaborate borders. The field design demonstrates remarkable restraint, containing only a single diamond-shaped medallion rendered in coral-red with intricate internal patterning, creating a focused focal point within the expansive negative space. Four small decorative corner spandrels echo the medallion's coloration and motifs, creating visual balance through the finely detailed borders Doroksh rugs are celebrated for, while maintaining the field's unique openness. The border exhibits extraordinary complexity with six concentric bands of varying widths, each featuring distinct geometric and floral motifs. The inner borders utilize predominantly coral-red grounds with geometric patterns, while the outermost border employs a camel ground with turquoise and red accents in alternating medallion forms.
This progressively layered border structure creates a frame-within-frame effect that draws the eye inward toward the central field. The palette demonstrates exceptional color harmony through the controlled use of indigo blue, coral-red, turquoise, camel, and selective black accents throughout. This is a bold, graphic, personal antique piece; a piece of weaving history most likely from a special workshop with a deep reverence for the charm of geometric rugs—this being one of the most elegant and versatile we’ve seen.
