A important American Impressionist painting by Isabella Howland (1895-1974), "Ocho Rios", Jamaica, 1940.
Howland was active in both Boston & New York, this impressionistic painting depicts locals washing laundry in a river located in Ocho Rios (Spanish for Eight Rivers) Jamaica. The painting shows six brightly clothed figures by a river washing clothing, the short yet decisive linear brush stokes are applied in the impasto manner, the rest of the composition also in bright primary colors.
To the verso is a preliminary sketch of the work by the artist, the sketch also has Howland's annotations for the finished painting. The painting is housed in the original frame, signed to the verso & sketch, condition is very good, this very attractive painting by a major American female artist is ready to hang on your wall.
Isabella Howland (1895–1974) was an American painter, sculptor, and caricaturist.
Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Howland was associated with Maine for much her career; she also lived and worked in New York City. Several of her works are owned by the Whitney Museum of American Art, and she is also represented in the collection of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. As a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, she received a scholarship to work at the Art Students League of New York and was active in the WPA. Her papers are currently in the collection of the Archives of American Art. Ten of her bronze caricatures of artists are owned by the National Portrait Gallery. Other works of art are housed in; U.S. General Services Administration Fine Arts Collection, Spencer Museum of Art, The Smithsonian Institution, Portland Art Museum, Columbia University Collection, Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, to name just a few.
