Handwoven in wool and originating from France, this 2x11 French Gobelins pictorial tapestry from the early 18th Century is a rare and special new curation from Rug & Kilim—"Mois Grotesques" by Claude Audran le Jeune.
On the Design:
This vertical panel represents a Gobelins tapestry from the celebrated "Mois Grotesques" series designed by Claude Audran le Jeune circa 1708-1709. The design employs a classically-inspired grotesque format with compartmentalized vertical organization on a pale gold ground. The design features a sophisticated arrangement of mythological figures, decorative cartouches, and ornamental devices stacked in vertical progression. The panel demonstrates characteristic early 18th century French Régence aesthetic with its refined balance between architectural framework and decorative elements.
The iconography includes zodiacal and seasonal references associated with one of the twelve months, rendered with exceptional technical precision in the figural elements. The colorway employs a restrained palette dominated by burgundy-aubergine tones against the golden ground, creating elegant contrast while maintaining visual coherence. This specific panel likely represents one section from a complete set that would have formed an integrated decorative program commissioned for royal apartments. The refined design reflects the technical mastery of the Gobelins workshops during this significant transitional period between Louis XIV and Louis XV decorative styles, when the heavier Baroque elements were yielding to more graceful, asymmetrical compositions that would later evolve into Rococo.
Condition:
This Antique French tapestry further enjoys good condition for its age and origin—intended for use in wall-hanging projects only.
Buyers will note this piece is one of a pair in the same size, and may enquire to purchase both as a set or each individual piece upon request.
