This Neapolitan market scene is a mid 19th century view from inside the Porta Capuana (gate) in Naples, formerly a bustling market area. This small, lovely piece captures the pedestrian pace of the city, as people take their time, sometimes stopping to engage with their neighbors. The image is a nostalgic glimpse of Neapolitan life from a time long past and a setting long changed.

Signed in bottom right, Ercole Gigante (Italy 1815-1860) was a Neapolitan painter not as widely recognized as his older brother and teacher, the artist Giacinto Gigante. Like Giacinto, Ercole painted scenes of the city of Naples and its environs in what was then the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. Ercole employed a looser painting style than his Neapolitan contemporaries, and he was exceedingly adept at portraying the brilliant sunlight and colors of southern Italy. A wonderful piece for the collector.
