This French walnut 19th century wine tasting table, properly known as a vendange, was made by an artistic process of adhering a painted canvas to the top surface as a tactile and durable finish for sampling the current vintage. Originally the canvas would have been dense with illustrations of red roses and vines on a black background now variably patinated leaving behind an embossed texture of the flora with thin traces of color. Used by wine makers throughout France and Europe, these specialized tables work by a tilting mechanism that allows its top to be positioned in upright orientation taking up less space in tightly-quartered cellars. A quick twist of the V-shaped support leg locks the top in place when flat.
