This wine tasting table, properly known as a vendange, was made in the late 19th century in France by an artistic process of adhering a painted canvas to the walnut planks creating a tactile but durable finish. Originally the painting would have been dense with red roses and vines on a black background–now variably patinated–the fugitive pigment leaving behind the embossed texture of the flora with thin traces of color. Used by wine makers throughout France and Europe, these specialized tables use a tilting mechanism that allows its top to be positioned in upright orientation taking up less space in tightly-quartered cellars. A quick twist of the V-shaped support leg locks the top in place when flat.
