This wine tasting table, properly known as a vendange, was made in the late 19th century in France by an artistic process of adhering a painted canvas to the walnut planks creating a tactile but durable finish. Originally the painting would have been dense with red roses and vines on a black background–now variably patinated–the fugitive pigment leaving behind the embossed texture of the flora with thin traces of color. Used by wine-makers throughout France and Europe, these specialized tables use a tilting mechanism that allows its top to be positioned in upright orientation – taking up less space in tightly-quartered cellars. A quick twist of the V-shaped support leg locks the top in place when flat.
