Roman De Tirtoff, known by the pseudonym Erté, was a Russian-born French designer who flourished in many fields including set … Read more Roman De Tirtoff, known by the pseudonym Erté, was a Russian-born French designer who flourished in many fields including set design, fashion, and the graphic arts, spanning most of the 20th century. He began working for Harper’s Bazaar in 1915 creating over 240 covers for the magazine for over 22 years. His fashion illustrations appeared in numerous other publications. During 1976 Erté was awarded the title of Officer of Arts and Letters, and in 1982 the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris by the French government. His work is housed in private and permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum to name a few.
