An antique Japanese Haniwa burial sculpture of a stout body horse figure standing on four stocky columnar legs, face directed … Read more An antique Japanese Haniwa burial sculpture of a stout body horse figure standing on four stocky columnar legs, face directed forward, thick neck, cropped mane, saddle marks and cropped tail rising at an alert angle that gives the animal a distinguished posture. The Haniwa are hollow low-fired, unglazed red clay funerary objects that were produced during Japan’s Kofun period (roughly 250 to 538 A.D.) as "tomb guardians.” They were placed on burial mounds of the elite for protection and good fortune.

This Hamiwa was acquired from a reputable auction house. A larger Kofun period Haniwa horse sculpture was sold at Christie’s in 2001 for $43,750.
