Professional … Read more Maurice-François Garin (Arvier, 3 March 1871 – Lens, 19 February 1957) was a French-naturalized Italian road cyclist and pistard. Professional from 1893 to 1911, he won the first edition of the Tour de France in 1903 and two Paris-Roubaix.

He was among the protagonists of the heroic era of cycling, with victories in long-distance races. After finishing third in the first edition of Paris-Roubaix in 1896 (behind the German Josef Fischer and the Dane Charles Meyer), he won it two years in a row, in 1897 and 1898. He also won less prestigious races, such as the Paris-Brest-Paris of 1901 and the Bordeaux-Paris of 1902.

His year of glory was 1903, with success in the first Tour de France, run between 1 July and 19 July. In addition to the inaugural stage, he won two other stages, out of a total of six. See less
