Still Life with Two Fish
Signed JULES PAGES lower right front and center back by an estate stamp.
About estate stamps: Unsigned works that were part of an artist's estate when the artist died may have the benefit of an “estate stamp” (a stamp of the artist's signature created by those handling the estate). The executors handling the estate authenticate the artworks and stamp all the works before they are sold. The executors then destroy the stamp so it cannot be used in the future. For professionally handled estates like this one, there are no issues with the work and its values is comparable to those works signed by the artist.
About the Artist: Jules Eugene Pagès (1867-1946) was born in San Francisco. At age 21, he went to Paris in 1888 to study at the Académie Julian, a major art training center and alternative to the official Ecole des Beaux Arts popular with foreign art students and many leading modern artists. After his art studies, Jules Pagès returned to San Francisco to work as an illustrator before returning to Paris in 1902. He made Paris his home base for 40 years, taught classes at the Académie Julian, and served as its director, gaining international recognition for his unusual talent. He had exhibited at the Paris Salon, 1895 with honorable mention, and won Gold Medals there in 1899 and 1905. He also returned to California frequently and exhibited at the Steckel Gallery in Los Angeles in 1909; at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915; at the Bohemian Club, 1924 solo exhibition; the California Palace of Legion of Honor, 1946 memorial exhibition.
