Cheerful Tanuki statue made from Shigaraki Pottery, Shōwa era, Japan.
This Tanuki statue, crafted from Shigaraki clay, represents a mythical creature from Japanese folklore.
Dimensions: height 32 cm, width 20 cm, depth 19 cm. The statue has a Shigaraki stamp on the back of the headgear.
Made from glazed Shigaraki clay, this Tanuki exudes a rustic charm.
The Tanuki is a mischievous Japanese raccoon dog with magical powers, featuring a large belly, an enlarged scrotum, and a sake bottle.
In Japan, Tanuki statues are placed at the entrances of homes, shops, and restaurants for good luck, protection, and prosperity.
Tanuki belong to the yokai, mythical beings known for their mischief, mastery of disguise, and shape-shifting abilities, yet they are also easily tricked. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no

however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
