Offered is one large sterling flat butter spreader in Whiting's honeysuckle pattern.
The spreader is 7 1/4" and weighs a hefty 49 grams.
Stamped on the back 'STERLING, Whiting's hallmark, 5, PAT APPL FOR' along with the retailer's name. The hallmark and retailer's name are mostly worn away.
Whiting's Honeysuckle pattern was designed by a young Charles Osborne in the late 1860s. The pattern was first offered in 1870 when Osborne was only 24 years old! Honeysuckle is one of the earliest Japonisme silver work as Japan's decorative arts were first shown in the west in the 1860s. Tiffany later offered a similar pattern and all the high end makers offered japonisme mixed metal works.
As true with all new styles, most japonisme items produced initially were at the top of the market. For example these spreaders are an inch or more longer and almost twice the weight of those in traditional 19th century patterns. Unusual for high end 19th century silver, these were NEVER been monogrammed.
Don't miss this chance to add this rare piece to your collection.
