additional information:
the secessionist seating group shown here, consisting of two armchairs and a side table, was not originally designed as a coherent ensemble, but rather combines pieces whose formal language harmonizes exceptionally. This stylistic agreement illustrates the close design relationship within the viennese art scene around 1900 and illustrates the mutual influences between the leading designers and manufacturers of that time.
the armchairs were designed by joseph maria olbrich in 1898/1899 for dr. Designed by friedrich victor spitzer and manufactured by the furniture manufacturers josef and michael niedermoser. With these chairs, olbrich, a founding member of the vienna secession (1897), created an example of the clear lines and reduced ornamentation that were characteristic of the avant-garde movements of this era.
the side table was designed by gustav siegel for jacob & josef kohn in 1899 and produced from the paris world exhibition in 1900. As a student of prof. Josef hoffmann at the school of applied arts and later chief designer at kohn, siegel combined constructive innovation with an elegant design language. His designs are considered key works of bentwood technology and contributed significantly to the international recognition of viennese furniture design.
an essential element that connects the individual pieces is the textile design: both the armchairs and the table were covered or lined with the “diana” fabric, which josef hoffmann designed for backhausen & söhne in 1909. This common textile component reinforces the visual unity of the furniture and at the same time refers to the interdisciplinary collaboration within the viennese decorative arts scene.
although the seating group was not originally conceived as a unified ensemble, its composition reveals the close design relationships of the artists and manufacturers involved. It impressively demonstrates the shared striving for a new, modern formal language that characterized the vienna secession at the turn of the century. This piece has an attribution mark,
