Antique Victorian Cast Metal Reposse Plaque El Pelele Goya
Cast after Goya’s famous tapestry “The Puppet”
The puppet (1791 - 1792) is a tapestry cartoon by Francisco de Goya, one of those he made for tapestries destined for the office of King Charles IV of Spain in El Escorial. It is a popular scene. It belongs to Goya's last period as a painter of tapestry cartoons.
Four young girls dressed as majas toss a puppet in a lush landscape with a river running through it, with a stone building in the background. The game, played during some popular festivals and as a farewell ritual for singles, symbolizes here the power of women over men, a general theme of this group and repeated in Goya's work, with examples in the series of engravings of the Caprichos and the Disparates, as well as in his albums of drawings.
