This refined 17th-century bust of Mercury, masterfully sculpted from white Carrara marble, depicts the Roman god of commerce, travelers, and eloquence in timeless simplicity. His characteristic winged cap (petasus) and classically draped robe are rendered with great craftsmanship, giving the sculpture a dignified and harmonious appearance.
Mercury was a beloved symbol in the canal houses of Amsterdam, the city of merchants, where he embodied prosperity and entrepreneurship. This bust, with its subtle expression and balanced composition, is a rare example of the elegant sculpture that once adorned the interiors of prominent merchant residences. A timeless piece with significant historical value.
