A very charming early 19th century French tole peinte vase or urn with a gilt figure of a dancing maiden with one breast exposed playing a sistrum, ancient musical instrument. The urn supported on a rectangular plinth by four gilt lion paw feet. The sides decorated with stylized gilt moths.
The sistrum was used during religious ceremonies to ward off evil spirits with its jingling noise. It was particularly necessary in the observance of mystery cults such as the worship of Isis, and statues of the goddess often depict her holding a sistrum.
Measures: 8.5 inches high 5.25 square.
