This piece is constructed of solid elm, which has been lacquered in black and adorned with hand-painted motifs. It hails from the Shanxi province of China.
While its brass hardware is original, the metal hinges on the two middle doors were replaced at some point, likely in the mid-twentieth century. The rest of the wooden-dowel hinges are original.
Given its advanced age, this piece is in decidedly fair condition; time has gifted it a rich patina.

There is a 12-inch-wide hole left in one of the posterior elm planks. - I am uncertain as to whether this is the result of damage by previous owners. - Might also be the plank's original shape, considering that the plank appears to share the same lacquered finish of the ornamented areas at its front and top sides. These sideboards were intended for daily domestic use and were constructed for longevity. Oftentimes, agrarian communities in more remote parts of the province would select whatever elm was available to ensure a piece's functionality. Irregular backside planks are not uncommon. less
