this painting is signed by the artist rudolf weisse at the bottom right: weisse was born in aussig (today usti, czechia), on the banks of the elbe.
he continued his studies at the vienna academy from 1876 to 1880, then, like his fellow artists (ludwig deutsch and rudolf ernst among others), he settled in paris.
there he gained a reputation as an orientalist painter and began exhibiting regularly at the salon from 1889, also participating in the universal exhibition until 1927. He would be a gold medalist in 1889
weisse traveled notably to egypt and beyond, making numerous sketches and collecting objects which he incorporated into his works to represent the bustling and colorful life of cairo's shopping streets.
