The original painted surface is in exceptional condition and was well executed meant to mimic the aesthetics of vibrant grain from imported woods like Mahogany. There were plenty of Vermont cabinet makers working with Mahogany, but they would need the trade connections to acquire it and a sufficient enough market to afford it. Most Vermont furniture was crafted from abundant local timbers, like pine, and this uniquely Vermont folk art paint would decorate the furniture found in upper-class 18th & 19th century homes. Vermont furniture is probably the most underrepresented schools of study in early New England cabinet making and we would highly recommend the Bennington Museum & the Shelburne Museum to anybody looking to learn more. The box measures 28 1/2” wide x 12 1/2” x 14 1/2” tall. When the lid is fully open the height is 26” tall. See less
