This genuine historical artifact African antique solid carved wood is a a family heirloom. It’s a unique piece that reflects the rich West African culture and the craftsmanship of West African artistry. The door is 5ft long x 2ft wide . The piece is a substantial, carved wooden panel intricately carved with traditional Yuroba tribe in Nigeria, given its size, its rectangular shape and quite thick material likely made from a single slab of wood. The wood is dark, with a rich, uneven patina suggests age and handling. The grain is visible, indicating a relatively dense hardwood. Composition: The panel is divided into four main horizontal registers, separated by decorative bands of geometric patterns (zigzags, triangles, and what appear to be intertwined motifs). These bands not only visually separate scenes but also add to the overall aesthetic richness.
Carving Style: The carving is deep and in high relief, creating strong shadows and giving the figures a robust, three-dimensional quality. The figures are stylized, with simplified anatomical features, large heads, and often elongated or prominent limbs. This is characteristic of traditional Yoruba tribes craftsmanship. The narrative is clear, with figures interacting within each scene. The piece is intact, solid and free of major cracks or repairs, in excellent condition. The multi-panel narrative style, the specific artistic conventions for rendering human figures (e.g., facial features, stylized limbs, prominent eyes), the use of geometric borders, and the depiction of daily life, ritual, and leadership are all hallmarks of Yoruba carving traditions, particularly those found on doors in palace posts.
With deep, aged patina on both front and back, and the traditional carving style making. The estimated date range Late 19th Century to Mid-20th Century (circa 1880 - 1950s).
This is a very fine and well-preserved example of Yoruba wood carving. The detailed narrative scenes offer insight into Yoruba culture, and the quality of craftsmanship is high. The intact condition, as confirmed by the images, significantly contributes to its value. It's a culturally rich and aesthetically powerful piece showcasing the artistry and skill of the African artisans. With its DE-COR | Globally Inspired brand, this collectible item serves as a beautiful representation of African heritage and history. The door's design and craftsmanship make it a standout piece that adds a touch of cultural authenticity to any space.
