Giuseppe Casciaro was born in Ortelle, in the province of Lecce. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples under Domenico Morelli, Filippo Palizzi and Gioacchino Toma. He won numerous prizes and distinctions there. An exhibition of pastel drawings by Francesco Paolo Michetti in Naples in 1885 inspired him to such an extent that pastel became his preferred medium.

Casciaro presented his own exhibition of pastel drawings in Naples in 1887. His subjects are usually views of Naples and its surroundings, as well as the islands of Capri and Ischia.

Between 1892 and 1896, the artist went to Paris where the Goupil gallery devoted a personal exhibition to him and placed several commissions with him.
In 1900, Casciaro won a bronze medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition.
In 1902 he was a professor at the Accademia in Naples, and in 1906 he was responsible for teaching the art of pastel to Elena di Savoia, then Queen of Italy. This piece has an attribution mark,
