This is an exceptionally large and exquisitely designed George III highly-figured, flame mahogany linen press made in England during the late 18th century.
The upper cabinet is capped with a substantial and crisply-carved, molded dentil cornice. Two large panel doors below the frieze unlock to reveal a set of four linen trays that slide out for ease of use. The lower case has a pull-out shelf for folding and four graduated drawers with working locks. The base features a classically-shaped, undulating scalloped apron and splayed bracket feet.
The graceful contour of this rectilinear linen press is highlighted by a fine inlay of satinwood that outlines the frieze, door panels, drawers and base.
This stately, two-part linen press, is made of mahogany of exceptional quality and color. Mahogany is one of the finest hardwoods for furniture-making, having withstood the test of time for stability, fine grain pattern and rich, consistent coloring that finishes beautifully. The mahogany used for this piece is a wonderful example of the grain variation and figuring that happens at the point where a large branch grows from a tree’s truck. The extreme compression of wood fibers at this joint adds strength to support the branch’s weight, and is what creates the majestic grain variation and figuring seen in this piece.
This antique linen press is in beautiful original condition. The traditional brass bail pulls with Chippendale style backplates and locks are original. There is minor wear and slight signs of shrinkage and dryness commensurate with its age and use.
