This is an early 20th century Indian re lacquer box completely hand-painted with multiple doors and compartments -- each opening up to reveal a different scene. Based on the illustrations this would seem to be a Wedding box, showing the bride and groom on the outside doors, and various groups of attendants and friends in different scenes as the box opens wider and wider. There is one small drawer at the bottom, but mostly this is a series of doors that keep opening to reveal more scenes on each side that opens. This is a decorative box perfect to sit on a dresser -- at 12.5" H and 8" W, 5.5"D. Because of fading, the outer paintings are somewhat lighter in color, but the inner ones get brighter and brighter the further you open them, as they have been protected from the sun. I wish I knew more about the scenes depicted, and I have been unable to locate another box just like this one -- a truly unique addition to your Chinoiserie/Asian decor! See less
