A superb early 19th century English portrait of a young mother and her child done in oil on canvas is … Read more A superb early 19th century English portrait of a young mother and her child done in oil on canvas is framed in a deeply coved gilt period frame with carved leafage rims.
The painting was donated to The Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1968 by Mary Griggs Burke (1916-2012), an internationally known art collector and philanthropist who was born in St. Paul.
This fine portrait of the Cooper women projects their beauty, charm, and intelligence through the eyes of an academically trained master of oil on canvas. Possibly by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) or of the circle of William Owen (1769-1825), the ladies are dressed in the style of 1810-1830's with neoclassicism at its peak. Reclined on a gold upholstered chaise longue, they rest in front of a dramatic red drapery. Through the window at the left, we view the calm of the English countryside with billowing clouds in a blue sky over rolling hills with trees.
