* the leipzig painter and draftsman werner tübke (1929–2004) is one of the most prominent artistic personalities in the gdr. From 1964 he was a lecturer at the university of graphics and book arts in leipzig, from 1972 professor and from 1973 to 1976 rector. Since the 1970s, tübke has made several trips to italy (first trip in 1971), which was out of reach for many of his compatriots at the time. Since then, intensive experiences in places such as venice, milan, florence, rome, capri and sicily have been reflected in his work in a variety of ways. Italy also marked a turning point with regard to his own career: a solo exhibition in emilio bertonati's milan gallery in 1971 brought his international breakthrough as an artist.
